When did Halloween become this loud, chaotic thing reserved only for kids?

Every year around this time, I skip the whole-house transformation. Instead, I create my own quiet Halloween on a single tray at my desk. Velvet, dark chocolate, a glass of wine. It's not a party. It's a ritual that belongs entirely to me.
